With only a sheet covering his body, Daniel turned and stared out to sea. The curtains were open as they always were and the moonlight was dancing on the gently rolling black waves, painting them silver. Daniel had seen it many times before but tonight was different. Tonight he knew that Libby could be looking at the same darkened horizon from the window in the suite next to his.

The next morning, he woke with a resolve to keep his promise to himself and his family, no matter how difficult it might be. He was returning to Chezlovinka in four days. He could not complicate it further, neither would he ever hurt Libby again. There was a divide between them that he could never again cross. This time he could not afford to get swept up in his feelings.
Libby had finished breakfast when he arrived on deck, looking for her. He had taken a call from the chief stewardess when heâd stepped from the shower about a crew member who was unwell.
âGood morning, Libby.â
She turned and smiled a half-smile in his direction. âGood morning, Daniel.â
He wanted to ask if she had slept well but decided to stay away from any personal conversation and keep it about work only. âI hope you can put yesterday behind you. The coastguard picked up Maxwell early this morning.â
Libby nodded. âGood to hear.â Her reply was without emotion and it made Daniel wonder what she might be thinking, but he knew he had no right to ask.
âIf itâs okay with you, we need to make a crew cabin call.â
âWhy do you need me?â she asked curtly as she placed her plate back on the end of the buffet with others that had been used by guests.
âItâs a young woman. She sounds a little distressed and is complaining of gastro symptoms. I hope to hell itâs not, because we know that can spread through the ship very quickly. Her symptoms do sound vague but Iâm also hoping itâs not appendicitis. I would ordinarily go alone, as itâs nothing I canât manage, but she asked for a female doctor. When we explained that wasnât possible, she asked for you to attend with me.â
âThatâs fine. Whatever she wants,â Libby replied matter-of-factly.
He suspected it was not her ideal situation, but she was showing him professional courtesy and he appreciated that.
âThank you, Libby. Iâve got my bag with extra gloves, masks and a couple of disposable gowns just in case it is gastroenteritis,â he told her as he began walking in the direction of the glass elevator.
âIf it is, how do you plan on controlling that on board?â Libby asked as she followed him.
âIf I consider it a risk, Iâll take away her swipe card and secure the cabin. If she has a cabin buddy we will keep an eye on them too and quarantine her in another cabin if possible. I donât like to do it but sometimes itâs necessary even on a yacht this size.
